Bring the Steel Industry the Right Kind
of Automation for Joining Steel Coils
Steel Mill

For
over 40 years Newcor has been supplying steel manufacturers and steel service plants with
end-to-end overlap welding machines and systems for joining steel coils in continuous
processing lines.
Much of the successful welding technology and
processing that has been developed for these coil applications was originated by Newcor...
and a great deal of it has been patented. Many machines have been operating successfully
for over 30 years.
Today, these machines and systems are available in a variety of
standard designs focusing on the specific needs of the steel mill and the steel service
plant. |

Mash Seam Welders
Newcor SWP (Shear, Weld, Planish) Mash seam welders
are designed and built for end-to-end welding of coils and strip for soft or hard rolled
steel, low to medium grades of carbon steel, and weldable grades of stainless steel.
Typically, these coils require end-to-end joining prior to a variety of subsequent
continuous processing operations which include galvanizing, tinning, annealing, bright
annealing, electrolytic cleaning, pickling, recoiling, tension leveling, polishing and
slitting.
The welding equipment can be provided in a variety of mechanical and
electrical configurations, Optional equipment is available for your specific processing
and product requirements. Various levels of manual and automatic electrical sequencing
controls and interfaces are available to optimize integration of equipment into the
processing line.

C-Frame Welders
Manual - The
C-Frame style coil joiner is designed to be used in coil joining applications where the
entry and exist coil edges do not need to be trimmed and where buildup at the coil joint
is not of major concern. In operations, the coil edges are centered by the operator and
overlapped 0.50 in. to 0.75 in.
The machine automatically places a series of spot welds or a
continuous resistance weld across the width of the coil. |

stainless steel.

|
Automatic - The
Newcor C-Frame welder can be designed with full automatic operation. Included are
motor-controlled strip centering, alignment paddles and automatically adjustable overlap
weld pressure regulators.
The weld programs and setup are done automatically
through a personal computer with a lookup table for weld schedules.
The operator or host computer simply downloads material
specifications to the machine computer. This machine functions without operator
assistance. |

Automatic system has a PC which allows
the operator to setup and run the machine from the control panel.

O-Frame Welders
Newcor O-Frame welders are designed
and built for end-to-end welding of coils and strip prior to continuous processing
operations such as galvanizing, tinning, annealing, bright annealing, electrolytic
cleaning, pickling, recoiling, tension leveling, polishing and slitting.
Materials processed include soft or hard rolled
steel, low and medium grades of carbon steel and weldable-grades of stainless steel. These
shear, weld and planish (SWP) machines are
used where material build-up at the weld joint is
important. Material build-up is controlled to 10% of parent metal. Tensile strength of the
weld joint is 100% of parent material.
The Newcor SWP O-Frame machines are available in two different
types: AC Double Pass Weld & Planish and DC Single Pass Weld & Planish.

AC Double Pass Weld
& Planish
Typical operation sequence:
- Clamp tail
- Shear tail square
- Remnant removed
- Head contacts stop gate
- Align head
- Clamp head
- Form loop
- Shear head square
- Overlap head and tail
- Weld
- Planish
- Open clamps
- Start line
- Reset
DC Single Pass Weld & Planish
The welding and planishing operations are performed
in a single stroke. As a result, these strip welders greatly reduce overall cycle time of
the welding operation by minimizing strip stoppage time, minimizing coil accumulator
storage capacity and maximizing operating line throughput.
A direct coupled DC motor drives the travelling carriage up to 40
feet per minute. Encoders eliminate limit switch set-up when changing strip widths. |

Newcor DC single pass O-Frame welder greatly reduces
overall cycle time of welding operation by welding and planishing in a single stroke.

Newcors shear designs are cylinder operated and
use crank arms to maintain parallelism.

Dual looping automation reduces the time required to join coil heads and tails. |

Notchers can be provided to trim the corners of the entry strip when it is wider than exit
strip, for easy travel through the process line. |

Current Collectors
As an added service to the steel
industry, Newcor designs and builds a proprietary line of
"Current Collector" units used to carry current to plating system roll stands.
As replacement units the Newcor design claims double the wear life
because of a unique silver contact bearing design. This bearing design was originally
developed for use with Newcor seam welders with great success. |
